Find the right colour for your trim

Painting your trim in a bold hue that contrasts with your wall colour will add a dash of drama to your room. If you’ve got neutral walls, you’ll find that you can use almost any hue on your trim. A bright trim colour works particularly well on windows and doors as it helps to create a dramatic frame from one view to another.

If you want a modern, understated look, we recommend you choose a wall colour that’s either just a few shades lighter or a few shades darker shade than your wall colour. You’ll find this creates a lovely sense of depth.

If you go just one or two shades lighter or darker, the effect will be even more muted and sophisticated.

White is a popular choice for trim and impossible to get wrong. Crisp and fresh, it will help you create a classic, timeless look and works wonders at highlighting ornate features, such as cornices, archways and mantels.

For a seamless, subtle look, paint your trim the same colour as your walls. This is a clever way of making small spaces seem larger, as the uninterrupted colour will help to open up the space and make the room feel more airy.

For a slightly less subtle look, paint the trim in a glossy or mid-sheen finish – this will highlight the trim without ruining the flow of the space.
